I took my first picture at age six with my Grandma’s
Browning box camera. The pictures were of my house,
Grandma Smith and two younger brothers Mike and Tim
in Florissant, Missouri. I still have both the
camera and the pictures. On my 12th birthday, my
parents gave me an inexpensive 35 -millimeter
camera, which enabled me to start my interest in
photography. I began by taking pictures of my family
and friends at birthday parties, holidays and
special events.
In
1975 when I was a senior at Hazelwood West High
School (first graduating class). I took a
photography course which taught me the basics
photography involving a hands on use of a camera and
video recorder. This showed me how to use the
equipment, work with people, objects,
structures and then formatting of all this together
to produce a finished product for sale and / or just
a memory. After graduation from Hazelwood I
continued the family and friends photos and
gradually began taking pictures of the Zoo, Forest
Park, local bands, Silver Dollar City, Shepherd of
the Hills, and did wedding pictures as gifts for
family and friends.
I
was married in 1978, divorced in 1983, and was
granted custody of my daughters, Sherry, age three
and Victoria, age one. My parents watched my
children on weekdays, so that I could work day
and night as required. Friday night to Sunday night
I had the children with me. This situation made it
impossible to continue photographing events and
advancing my career.
In
1986, my friend Marc Maltzman and I went out
to a night club El Rancho which the house band
Cruise was playing. Marc
introduced me to their drummer Michael Safron, the
founder, drummer, song writer, and ex - member of
Pavlov’s Dog. I had told him if he were to
reform his group that I would do pictures and video
in exchange for the rights to be the official band
photographer and a paid trip when the band went
overseas. Due to family obligations, the trip was
cancelled.
On
St. Patrick’s Day in 1991, at a singles dance
featuring Bob Kuban Band I met Joyce. We were
married in October 1992. She has been an influence,
supportive and a partner to me no matter how long it
takes for me to be recognized or published as a
photographer.
On Father’s Day in 1993, my father
stated that he knew that one day I would become a
professional photographer and be recognized for my
pictures. A week later, he died unexpectedly! I have
been striving ever since to achieve what he said.
In
1998 I learned that most artists only use
photographers when they need pictures of special
events, for flyer and poster advertisement, magazine
and newspaper pictures, cassette and/or CD covers,
and galleries.
Since the year 2000, I have been able to devote more
time to my photography. I am now able to work
nights, weekends, and special day events. It has
been my goal to help promote artists and bands by
taking live pictures before, during and after
performances. I am aware of the expenses, and know
that a photographer is not always affordable for
entertainers.
I
am offering a solution by providing pictures
at cost of materials, development, and time at
one-third of the normal photography price. My work
can be used for magazines and newspaper
advertisement, flyers, club promotion, agents,
posters, montage / collage, CD’s and web sites. |
